October 31, 2012 – Sheet Harbour, N.S. – Port of Sheet Harbour Management Inc., a subsidiary of the Halifax Port Authority (HPA) and Bluewater Stevedores Union Local 2065 have come to terms on a new contract at the Port of Sheet Harbour.
“With a new contract in place, we can assure cargo customers that the Port of Sheet Harbour has a skilled and stable work force that can move product efficiently and competitively for years to come,” said George Malec, Vice-President of Business Development & Operations at the Halifax Port Authority. “There is a lot of potential in this port and reliable labour is at its core.”
The HPA took over operations at the Port of Sheet Harbour in July after Nova Scotia Business Inc.’s contract with the previous management expired in 2011. As port manager, the HPA is responsible for all facets of the terminal’s operations, including negotiating directly with the local labour union.
“We’re pleased to have agreed to a new contract to continue labour operations at the Port of Sheet Harbour,” said Jason Josey, President of the Bluewater Stevedores Union Local 2065. “With Port of Sheet Harbour Management Inc. at the helm, we look forward to the future growth and development of cargo moved through the Port for the long-term benefit of our entire community.”
The Port of Sheet Harbour is a common user facility that’s well-positioned for breakbulk cargo activity. Logistec is the facility’s stevedoring services provider.
